A Tip To Overcome Procrastination

Today’s post is a simple one, but something that can IMMEDIATELY reduce your tendency to procrastinate. We all procrastinate, but successful people do it less and therefore get better results, yes with less effort.

I explain the underlying strategies this post is based on in my book “Get The Best Business Results With The Least Amount Of Effort“. If you haven’t yet purchased it, you really should. The title says it all and for $27 it’s a real bargain.

A Tip To Overcome Procrastination

Overcoming procrastination requires that you KNOW WHY you’re procrastinating. One of the top reasons is that you MAGNIFY a problem or TO DO item automatically, without knowing it. You make it bigger than it actually is.

I’ll prove it to you.

  • Make a list of 10 things you need to do this/next week.
  • Make a SECOND list of 10 things you DID last week.

Compare the two lists. I guarantee you your TO DO list for this/next week looks like MORE, HARDER, LONGER TO DO than your previous week’s list.

Am I right?

Just like a side rear view mirror on a car, your problems and to do list items appear bigger than they really are.

How do you get around this?

Chunk down your to dos into EASY, DIGESTIBLE PIECES… You know the joke “How do you eat an elephant? … One bite at a time”.

  • Clean my office, can be broken down to
    • Rearrange the files on my desk
    • Organise my filing cabinet or get filing boxes
    • Get folders to file my papers
    • Print less paper and organise my computer desktop
    • Throw out (recycle) any junk mail that comes in
    • File documents and papers ON THE DAY THEY COME IN
    • Keep my physical desktop clean with ONLY what I am working on
    • Remove unnecessary trinkets and paperweights on my desk
    • Straighten out my books so the bookshelf looks neat
    • Dust, clean or wash my desk/table

You get the picture. The thing is UNLESS you deal with this magnification problem, you’ll keep hesitating and procrastinating about things you really do need to get done and off your list!

Just remember you are the one HOLDING the magnifying glass!

How are you doing on your 10-day challenge?

Today’s post is really 3 or 4 things all wrapped into one. I tripped across something that I just had to give you and it all fell into place from there… Funny how that happens eh?

You know all about my 1 percent improvement doctrine that I have ‘spoken’ about on this and my other blogs… Today’s post is about how it can happen automatically, magically and effortlessly.

By now, you know about Paul Telling’s amazing talent… If not, shame on you and search on this and my other blogs for his name to see what I’m talking about.

Anyway… I was putting the finishing touches on a 3×4 foot poster he created that summarises the 3 days of the Exponential Internet and Business Building Bootcamp AND the 32-page session-by-session MindMap booklet that some very lucky people will be receiving as my gift…

That’s when I came across a document Paul prepared that I don’t think I’ve shared with you. Click on the hyperlink to download it!

It’s the Anthony Robbins 10 Day Challenge MindMapped in full colour!

Isn’t is amazing how you trip over stuff like this when you’re not looking for it?

If you attended UPW, you know all about what this is about – if you don’t you can click on the hyperlink and  check out Tony’s new blog

But the reason I am sending you this now is because it will remind you, in a fun way, about what you should be doing, if you want to hold yourself to a new standard…

If you did do the 10 Day Challenge after UPW, it would be interesting to know what has stayed as a habit and what you’ve slipped on and WHY…

The last point is that there are COUNTLESS hidden assets on YOUR computer right now that you can leverage to YOUR advantage and to your clients’, friends’ and/or family members’ benefit and advantage…

But nothing happens unless you do your 1 percent improvement.

President Obama Makes History

I got up at 2:30 AM to watch President Obama’s inauguration – what a spectacle! I never thought I would live to see the day a black man would be President of the United States, but then again the same was true of the Berlin Wall… This is a great and momentous day for the US and the World.

As a Canadian, I was brought up with full access to US television and its unique ‘culture’. So this means a lot to me. Now as an Australian resident (soon-to-be citizen), I am excited about what this can mean for the world if he lives up to the expectations and possibilities that many (including me) think he is capable of.

The reason I post about this is BECAUSE when history is made – you want to be a part of it. Monica and I have been up since 2:30 to watch it LIVE and see it unfold, much like we did when the Twin Towers were hit in 2001.

This is as much a turning point as 9-11 was for the US and the world – our thoughts are with the Obamas and the new administration as they embark on one of the most challenging but also opportunistic times for REFORM and REJUVENATION.

“Yes we can Mr President, yes we can!”

Don’t rent out your Mindspace for free

Today’s post is one of the concepts I learnt ab out 25 years ago that I attribute to giving me laser-beam clarity and focus that astonishes people who get to know me personally. It’s how I got out of technical support and into the top sales position in 12 months.

It’s disarmingly simple. When you are selling (or playing a sport), you are in your own mindspace, thinking about what you’re going to do. If for example, during a sales call, someone says something ridiculous – they take up space in your mind as you grapple with the absurdity of the statement – IF YOU LET IT.

In some cases, a disatisfied client needs to rant, sometimes you just need to listen, but when you ACCEPT it into your mind, it’s there, taking up space and paying you no rent!

Stop it!

You know what I’m talking about…

Stop it!

Otherwise you are renting out your mindspace for free and your sales are going to suffer.

You will lose more points in your game of tennis, squash or score fewer points in rugby, football, soccer…

Stop renting out your mindspace for free.

How? Simple – REJECT IT OUTRIGHT – kick it out like an unwanted visitor. Stop repeating the statements or comments and get your self-talk back on track to close the sale or win the next point.

In squash, I’ll repeat “Focus… Keep your eye on the ball… Wait before moving… Get ready… Breathe…” Near the end of a game it’s “3 more points, Breathe… 3 more points, Breathe… 3 more points, Breathe… 3 more points, Breathe…”

When I am on a sales call, I will repeat the NEXT thing I want to say INSTEAD of repeating the objection or complaint in my head. When the call is over and if the sale was not made – It stops there. I don’t re-play the words in my head again, I don’t share it with my colleagues, reinforcing it. I leave it behind once and for all.

I don’t forget it, because there is a lesson to be learnt, but I won’t let it dominate my mindspace – I can’t afford to let it.

The mind cannot think of two things at once.

You are either thinking what someone ELSE wants you to think or YOU decide.

It’s your choice, so make the choice!

I know this sounds easy to do – IT’S NOT. But it is the difference between winning and losing, making heaps of cash in sales and scrapping by to make a living…

How To Improve Your Results INSTANTLY by doing what’s bugging you

Your 1 percent improvement for today is quick and easy – do what’s bugging you and get it out of the way, right now. You have multiple things on your to do list that have been carried over (over and over and over). Several of them are quick and easy to get rid of.

Get rid of them and witness the relief and sense of satisfaction you get. It’s disproportionate and AMPLIFIED…

I’ll talk about that in my next post, but for today, let me give you some of my simple examples:

Antimimeticisomorphism: Ukrainian Artist

Every once in a while, an artist comes up with something that just defies logic and makes you watch it over and over again wondering how the heck does she do that?!?! Don’t dare to miss this amazing video, but first read the following..

This video shows the winner of “Ukraine’s Got Talent“, Kseniya Simonova, 24, drawing a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II. Her talent, which admittedly is a strange one, is mesmeric to watch.

The images, projected onto a large screen, moved many in the audience to tears and she won the top prize of about $130,000.00

She begins by creating a scene showing a couple sitting holding hands on a bench under a starry sky, but then warplanes appear and the happy scene is obliterated.

It is replaced by a woman’s face crying, but then a baby arrives and the woman smiles again. Once again war returns and Miss Simonova throws the sand into chaos from which a young woman’s face appears.

She quickly becomes an old widow, her face wrinkled and sad, before the image turns into a monument to an Unknown Soldier.

This outdoor scene becomes framed by a window as if the viewer is looking out on the monument from within a house.

In the final scene, a mother and child appear inside and a man standing outside, with his hands pressed against the glass, saying goodbye.

The Great Patriotic War, as it is called in Ukraine, resulted in one in four of the population being killed with eight to 11 million deaths out of a population of 42 million.

Kseniya Simonova says: “I find it difficult enough to create art using paper and pencils or paintbrushes, but using sand and fingers is beyond me. The art, especially when the war is used as the subject matter, even brings some audience members to tears. And there’s surely no bigger compliment.”

A big thank you to Peter Wilson of Oz Cakes for sending this to me. If you come across a video like this, please forward it to me so I can keep sharing incredible talent like this with as many people as possible.

The value of time…

I published a poll on Linked In that asked what an extra hour per day is worth and these are the results which although not scientific, do reflect my anecdotal experience…

The results say quite a bit about how much and how little people value their time.
