The two previous posts focused on two different, but related Deliberate Practice Principles; the first to watch your opponent while he/she hits the ball and the second, to ANTICIPATE his/her next shot.
Admittedly, the second is a lot harder to master.
You’re in luck, you can learn to do this even when you’re not on court or watching squash videos.
- When driving: Focus on the cars in front of you and try to anticipate where they’re going BEFORE they get there. Specifically when they will change lanes and turn corners.
- When walking: Put your phone down and observe people walking in front of you and do the same thing – anticipate their movements BEFORE they make them. You’ll notice their “tell signs” are much more obvious when they are walking towards you rather than away from you.
- When watching other sports: Do the same thing… Anticipate what the players, athletes will do AHEAD of their actions, kick/pass the ball, where they will hit it (table tennis, badminton, tennis). Who will dive in the water first BEFORE the gun goes off. Who will win the race based on their relative starts, acceleration.
All of these activities will train your VISUAL CORTEX to look for leading indicators and eventually, it will become autonomic. You’ll be able to READ THE PLAY like a legendary champion.
This blog post is based on the concept of making constant 1 percent improvements to achieve your goals faster.
