We all (try to) do it… Come up with New Year’s Resolutions.
We DREAM BIG (Hairy, Audacious Goals)…
But then life has other plans and only a very small minority achieve their goals.
The primary REASON is that in so doing, they try to impose certainty that are inherently dynamic and unpredictable — careers, relationships, health, business, identity and purpose. So when reality changes, they interpret the gap between their expectations and outcomes as failure.
A more tactical and effective approach is to adopt an experimental mindset.
Instead of chasing perfection or forcing predetermined outcomes, treat each (big) goal as a continuous process of deliberate experiments that support and contribute to it. Run small, low-risk tests using the Deliberate Practice feedback loop. Observe and take note of what gives you energy, momentum and clarity versus what drains your focus, motivation and emotional bandwidth. Then readjust and refine accordingly with another, possibly slightly different, test.
This removes unnecessary pressure because the objective is no longer to “prove yourself right” and achieve the big goal — the objective is to complete each experiment to learn what works faster to make better decisions for realignment based on your own, personal real-world evidence rather than emotion, ego or social conditioning (FOMO).
Why this can really help you if you struggle to achieve your goals:
- Rigid goals often create frustration because life requires flexibility and adaptation to the ever-changing context we cannot control.
- By creating easily achievable tests, we learn adaptation instead of blind persistence that is often self-defeating.
- Small experiments lower emotional resistance to overcome inertia and the predisposition to procrastinate because they should be easily measurable and achievable.
- The test creates the feedback loop with the DAILY tracking, making you accountable instead of leaving it up to chance.
- Learning is more valuable than perfection because adaptation beats stubbornness over the long term.
- You will learn the tiny, consistent actions that create momentum for you that often (seemingly magically) unlock opportunities that you would never have predicted in advance, creating ‘quantum leaps’ forward as your reward for being strategically disciplined and committed.
- The best part is that because each test is an iterative improvement on the previous ones, you will learn what works for you with less effort to achieve more of your (big) goals… FASTER!
