Hi Marc,

This applies to everything, not just athletics. For developing Electronics Products or writing the Embedded Software that goes with them you also have to go beyond what you know you can do if you want to achieve an outstanding success.

I have done the impossible a couple of times because I didn't know it was impossible. As it turned out, it wasn't impossible, just very difficult and counter to popular wisdom. But it did take hard work and it was a huge stretch.

I have also been a competitive athlete so I understand how that fits with what you are writing.

In "The Dip", Seth Godin make the point that the last 2% is what makes a huge difference. In training, the first 98% takes you to where you can already go. The last 2% takes you beyond that and that is where all the growth and gains come from. Very few people go there.

I love the picture. What a great example of single minded focus on a single purpose.

Definitely easier said than done.

As a former Tennis player, I found that even if you couldn't hammer it every time, just getting it back put pressure on the other player. They expected a winner and now they have to hit a winner all over again.

Of course if you can hammer it then that is even better.

My favourite was taking the 200km/hr serve and pushing it back outside the reach of the server who had often barely recovered from the follow through as they watched it go by. Every time I managed to do this they felt they had to serve that bit harder and their percentages soon plummeted.

This is a great insight which applies to many other aspects of life.

For me as a business owner, you can't be working in the business delivery the goods or services, and also working on the business looking at it holistically.

You also have to be humble enough to learn from others. Noone has their act completely together. But everyone can potentially teach you at least one thing of value you didn't know yourself.

Thanks for sharing.

Wow - that's amazing. If you're that competitive, you'll want to get yourself a copy of The Masters Athlete book written by Dr Peter Reaburn of Queensland who is also an elite Masters Athlete.

16 Medals - you and swimmers sure have the advantage to win multiple medals with all those events!

Onward and upward!

Hi Marc,
I too have had a big shift and it has to do with the 1% ers, my sport is indoor & outdoor rowing, I fine tuned what I was doing since 2009 World Masters Games in Sydney, where I paired up with Analese Gerling & won 1 Gold medal in the Mixed B age division (35-43) Double sculls.

This masters games in Adelaide I decided to enter the indoor ergo competition which was run on wed & thursday, from that I gained a silver in the 500 metre event and Gold in the 1,000 & Gold in the 2,000 metre events for age 50-55. I am now 50. Over the next 3 days of competition on the water I rowed in 20 races 3 were heats, the rest were finals. I came home with 13 Gold Medals and 3 Silver. So I found out it is possible to go all out, 3 of my races were won by less than .4 of a second.

Would love to talk to you sometime.

All the best,
Michael

Thanks for this pyramid Marc, I've had it in my head but this clarifies it.

I played my first World Masters Squash at Sydney 2009 and have started focused training now for Turin in 2013.

Another of your tips is a beauty: watching pros play on Youtube - turning the shoulder to get into position to retrieve from the back corners is my present mission.

What a fantastic outcome Marc. Congratulations and well deserved. You exemplify the benefits of focus, perseverence and doing it smarter like noone else I know.

Like Jocelyn we at Successful Endeavours appreciate your input into our success. We may not be wining Gold at Squash, but if Electronics Design was a sport then with your help we are now the gold medal champions of Australia for Industrial Electronics.

Marc........

Congratulations......... It was only a matter of time - time spent planning drills and training sessions, time focusing on executing the drills and training sessions, time traveling to precursor comps in preparation and build up to this tournament.

Enjoy the time now having won in convincing fashion - it is deserved.

P.S. Don't forget all the time playing socially as well - it all added up!

See you on court soon;
