I have a new product called “The Mindset Of A Champion”… It’s just hot off the press. It’s a 2-part series on what it takes to excel at sports – any sport. You’ve heard about the Mindset Of A Champion, but what is “it” exactly? It’s a different way of thinking and acting…
It’s one of life’s paradoxes. What it takes to MAKE you into a Champion can PREVENT you from becoming one. That is a really deep thought. One worth reflecting on. You need the DRIVE AND WILL TO WIN, but that very drive and especially ego can PREVENT you from the goal you so aspire to achieve…
What I’m talking about it playing to WIN versus playing to IMPROVE. I often play with players who just want to WIN on the DAY. That’s it, that’s all. They don’t care about tomorrow or the next day. Winning TODAY is everything.
I teach what I call the 1 percent improvement doctrine, which basically states that you want to improve 1 percent at time, every day instead of trying to go for the ‘big kill’ and improve ‘all at once’. That being said, having a MasterMind Group helps a lot, but that requires a little more commitment and discipline.
The Fastest Way To Get Better Results
The fastest way to get better results is to ask someone who is better than you. My ‘formula’ is to do what I did this week when I played a squash pro…
“What 3 things should I focus on to improve my game so that the next time I take a lesson with you, I can already have improved?”
That narrows it down and synthesises what I call my Next Best Steps. It also makes it easy for him to summarise the 3 easiest things that would make the biggest difference. By the way – if you have more than this, it becomes confusing and self-defeating.
So there you have it – another simple and easy strategy to put into practice, the next time you practice deliberately!
I am often asked where I get my drive, determination and motivation. I have to be honest with you that it has now become second nature to me to get and STAY motivated. I’ll give you a simple example. Friends of mine from www.HomeDeClutterAndFun.com sent me this YouTube video that has very positive anchors for me. It’s only 4 minutes and 9 seconds, but that is enough to GET me going for the whole day.
That’s because I watch the Olympics and get into them like a 5 year-old in a sandbox. I’m right there with the athletes for the joy of victory and the agony of defeat. The anchors are very strong and can be triggered any time I want – ON COMMAND.
So here is the video of David Foster’s Olympic theme song. By the way, he’s Canadian. The musician who performs this is playing all the instruments – NOW THAT IS INSPIRATIONAL!!!
Enjoy!
The real lesson here is that I TOOK the 4 minutes and 9 seconds to GET MOTIVATED. Then I had to share it with you which means I invested another 10 minutes writing this post and re-living experiences and memories in my mind to make sure I transmitted the enthusiasm and passion I have for excellence – the power of the human spirit that the Olympic Games embody…
I don’t know about you, but I’m pumped and ready to GO, GO , GO!!!!!
It’s called ‘muscle memory‘ and it may be working against you… Yes, your own body sabotaging your success. Every time you do something repetitively, it builds within your body’s ‘muscle memory’ so that the next time you make the request for that movement, it’s instant and automatic.
But here’s where the problem lies…
What if that movement is WRONG or NOT the one you want in a particular situation?
