Inspirational Quote: Don’t keep re-reading the past

You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one.
Next Chapter

If you want to create the ultimate destiny for yourself, I invite you to do My Best Year Ever Program – based on the well known process of New Year’s Resolutions.

Most people struggle with NOT KNOWING what they want. This step-by-step program will help you determine what you want so you can write the next chapter of your life as you would like it to unfold.

How exciting would it be if you could write your own future? I call that 20/20 Foresight – it’s a skill I teach ambitious business people. The hardest part of the process is knowing what you want.

Pressure At Work?

This is a classic motivational story worth sharing…

I hired a plumber to help me restore an old farmhouse, and after he had just finished a rough first day on the job, a flat tyre made him lose an hour of work, his electric drill quit and his ancient one-ton truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence.

On arriving he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked towards the front door, he paused briefly at a tree, touching the tips of the tree. When opening the door he underwent an amazing transformation.

His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.

Problem Worry TreeOh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing’s for sure, those troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and the children.

So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home and ask God to take care of them. Then in the morning I pick them up again.

“Funny thing is,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”

Don’t rent out your Mindspace for free

Today’s post is one of the concepts I learnt ab out 25 years ago that I attribute to giving me laser-beam clarity and focus that astonishes people who get to know me personally. It’s how I got out of technical support and into the top sales position in 12 months.

It’s disarmingly simple. When you are selling (or playing a sport), you are in your own mindspace, thinking about what you’re going to do. If for example, during a sales call, someone says something ridiculous – they take up space in your mind as you grapple with the absurdity of the statement – IF YOU LET IT.

In some cases, a disatisfied client needs to rant, sometimes you just need to listen, but when you ACCEPT it into your mind, it’s there, taking up space and paying you no rent!

Stop it!

You know what I’m talking about…

Stop it!

Otherwise you are renting out your mindspace for free and your sales are going to suffer.

You will lose more points in your game of tennis, squash or score fewer points in rugby, football, soccer…

Stop renting out your mindspace for free.

How? Simple – REJECT IT OUTRIGHT – kick it out like an unwanted visitor. Stop repeating the statements or comments and get your self-talk back on track to close the sale or win the next point.

In squash, I’ll repeat “Focus… Keep your eye on the ball… Wait before moving… Get ready… Breathe…” Near the end of a game it’s “3 more points, Breathe… 3 more points, Breathe… 3 more points, Breathe… 3 more points, Breathe…”

When I am on a sales call, I will repeat the NEXT thing I want to say INSTEAD of repeating the objection or complaint in my head. When the call is over and if the sale was not made – It stops there. I don’t re-play the words in my head again, I don’t share it with my colleagues, reinforcing it. I leave it behind once and for all.

I don’t forget it, because there is a lesson to be learnt, but I won’t let it dominate my mindspace – I can’t afford to let it.

The mind cannot think of two things at once.

You are either thinking what someone ELSE wants you to think or YOU decide.

It’s your choice, so make the choice!

I know this sounds easy to do – IT’S NOT. But it is the difference between winning and losing, making heaps of cash in sales and scrapping by to make a living…

“As a man thinketh, so is he”

If you haven’t read the classic book by James Allen, “As A Man Thinketh” published in 1937, you simply must get it and read it.

It’s available for FREE as a PDF on the Internet although I would recommend you go out and actually buy the book – it’s a source of inspiration that I am sure you’ll agree is worth the investment.

Anyway, today’s topic is about manifesting outcomes and results that you seemingly have no control over.

Today is the day BEFORE the start of the 2008 World Masters Squash Championships and I’ve been here in beautiful Christchurch for the past 2 days to acclimatise myself to the time zone, weather and surroundings.

I know that 2-hour time zones are quite hard for me to adapt to. I’ve been around-the-world more than 10 times and found that the 6 to 8 hour time zones are easier on me than the 2-3 hour ones for some reason.

The point of today’s blog is that I needed to get on the court today and selectively chose to go to the club where I am playing my first match tomorrow. That way I know how long it takes to drive there and I can have a mental image of the courts, changing room, etc. so that I can feel more comfortable tomorrow since it won’t be ‘new’ to me.

I also chose to go WHILE the parade of nations and opening ceremonies took place to increase my chances of getting on the court to have a hit. Yesterday, at another club where the tournament is being hosted, I was told all the courts are booked non-stop until the tournament kicks off on Monday.

When I got to the club – no one was there!

The front door was open, but not a single person was there. They left the door unlocked by mistake…

So I had the whole club to myself to get on EACH court and have a hit to see what the walls, floor and tin are like…

Even I was amazed to have been able to manifest such an outcome!

I was a little concerned about the temperature since it’s cooler here than in Sydney at this time of year, but as it works out, I play on an air conditioned court and that’s more or less equivalent to the conditions in the club which will bet a lot warmer when all the players and spectators are there.

The great thing is that I got to have my hit. The great news is that I was hitting well, confident and relaxed.

Wish me luck tomorrow – I believe in luck! I want all the luck I can get!!!

Onward and upward!

P.S.

This blog is not all about me, it’s about my personal experiences – this week my squash competition – and how they can relate to you.

I could have just as easily accepted what the person told me yesterday and NOT gone to the squash club this afternoon. I woud have ‘worried’ about things for nothing – now I feel confident and relaxed.

That’s important when you compete – to be in ‘peak state’.

In your life, your business, it’s the same thing – MANIFEST your results by being convinced they can happen and MAKE THEM HAPPEN.

I know, I know you think this is surreal and impossible – that’s why it won’t work for you.

You have to start SMALL and work your way up…

Baby steps.

I tell people to start with parking spaces. The next time you go shopping, manifest a GREAT parking spot. Even if you don’t know where you will be shopping. THINK POSITIVE and see what happens.

When I was teaching organisational behaviour to MBA students, I challenged all 35 students to get a BETTER parking spot than me – the result: I parked the closest to the front door of the building EACH and EVERY week for 12 weeks in a row. It became the ‘introduction’ to each class as everyone compared to my spot…

The stronger the belief, the better the outcome!
